Passageway for Compressed Time
The exhibition structure for Voyage of Imagination is a sort of passageway of compressed time. Unlike the other exhibition halls of As the Moon Waxes and Wanes, which considers stories about the collections of the past 30 years, this place will host stories about the changes to come in the environment of art museums 30 years from now. The bridge space on the 3rd floor, which mediates the Ramp Core, the representative void (Atrium) of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Gwacheon, and the Central Hall, will be reconfigured through this project. This place also visually connects Nam June Paik’s Dadaiksun, which has been the symbol of the MMCA Gwacheon for the past 30 years, and Bul Lee’s Willing to Be Vulnerable - Interlude, newly installed for this special exhibition. On the symbolic axis connecting these two gigantic utopias/dystopias, Voyage of Imagination will become the space that delivers a compressed experience of amplified time.
An overall length of 30m will be retained for the exhibition through the insertion of a corrugated structure into the 15m-long passageway. This structure will serve as a temporary pavilion where the architects’ new imaginings of the art museum will unfold. Conceptually the design of exhibition space is based on the assumption and perception that time and space in the universe may have domains where they can be found in a compressed state, different to the form in which they exist on the Earth. It is hoped that this place becomes a venue for further discussions about the art museum at a certain point in time in the future as well. Considering the given conditions for the exhibition space—let’s say an average temperature of above 30℃, the overlapped sides and narrow and corrugated passageways—it is meant that more diverse thoughts about the art museum will resurface through this amplified experience. The unfamiliar and heterogeneous experience will make visitors realize that MMCA Gwacheon is not just material in a closed system, but a medium in its own flowing as an extended field.
